What is Structural Engineering?
It is a sub-discipline of civil engineering in which structural engineers are trained to design the 'bones and joints' that create the form and shape of human-made structures. Structural engineers also must understand and calculate the stability, strength, rigidity and earthquake-susceptibility of built structures for buildings and nonbuilding structures. The structural designs are integrated with those of other designers such as architects and building services engineer and often supervise the construction of projects by contractors on site.
What is a Structural Engineer?
A structural engineer designs the physical structure of buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and durable. They also perform evaluations and maintenance on existing structures.
What does a Structural Engineer do?
- Design: Create the structural frame of a building, bridge, or other structure
- Calculate: Determine how much weight a structure can support, and how to resist forces like wind, snow, and earthquakes
- Select materials: Choose the right materials for the job, based on their density, stiffness, and other properties
- Prepare documents: Create construction documents, reports, and drawings
- Coordinate: Work with architects, builders, and general contractors to ensure the project is built correctly
- Evaluate: Assess the condition of existing structures, and recommend repairs or other improvements
